What’s Next for Manchester United? Four Stars Untouchable Amid Major Overhaul

As the summer transfer window looms, Manchester United finds itself in a pivotal moment, with just four players considered untouchable in what promises to be a tumultuous overhaul of the squad. Under the leadership of manager Ruben Amorim, the club is poised for significant changes after a disheartening season that has left fans anxious about the future.

Despite the disarray, United captain Bruno Fernandes, along with Harry Maguire, Amad, and January signing Patrick Dorgu, are the only players deemed essential to the club's future ambitions. These four stars, recognised for their pivotal roles amid a backdrop of struggle, won’t be sold regardless of the financial offers on the table. The rest of the squad, however, faces an uncertain future.

After falling to a catastrophic 4-3 defeat against Brentford, United currently sits 15th in the Premier League table, sparking an alarming need for reform. Amorim’s tactical shift to a 3-4-2-1 formation has not resonated with the squad—a clear signal that player adjustments will be absolutely necessary.

Remarkably, the financial realities at Manchester United dictate that significant player sales must occur before any substantial new signings can be made. Reports indicate that the club could let go of several key figures, including Luke Shaw, Casemiro, and young talents like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. Mainoo's impending contract negotiations bring further uncertainty; he has shone during the season but has not yet finalised a renewal—a situation that could lead to his departure if the right offer arises.

Meanwhile, Amorim has consistently emphasised the importance of integrating youth into the first team, particularly in the face of disappointing results. “They need to understand what it is to play for Manchester United,” he remarked after the recent match, highlighting the role of academy graduates in the club's future aspirations.

This transition period for Manchester United comes at a crucial time not only for their on-pitch performance but also for their financial health. Engagement in the Europa League could significantly boost their revenue streams, potentially enabling up to £120 million in additional funds should they qualify for the Champions League next season.

However, the current performances have left many questioning if further tactical realignment is needed to effectively utilise the talent available. With ownership issues lingering in the background under minority owner Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family still holding majority control, the club's direction is at a critical junction.

As fans speculate on potential acquisitions—like Liam Delap from Ipswich—the overarching question remains: Can Manchester United rediscover its former glory amid these profound changes? The summer promises a whirlwind of activity for the Red Devils, and it will be interesting to see how the club navigates this transitional phase.
