Liverpool Weigh Up Kingsley Coman Move Amid Injury Concerns And Premier League Battle

Liverpool’s summer transfer ambitions have taken a fascinating twist, with reports confirming renewed interest in Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman. While manager Arne Slot bolstered his attack by securing Mo Salah’s contract extension, the Anfield club remains eager to add further dynamism on the flanks—a need only accentuated by Premier League rivals circling for the same target.

The pursuit of Coman, one of Bayern’s most bankable assets, is laden with intrigue and risk. Although the French international, now 28, boasts seven league titles and the distinction of scoring the Champions League-winning goal for Bayern in 2020, his recent seasons have been disrupted by frequent injuries and inconsistent game time under new coach Vincent Kompany.

Kingsley Coman remains the most attractive sale asset for Bayern Munich this summer.

Respected Bundesliga journalist Christian Falk confirmed to Bild, “Liverpool are actually interested in him. He’s on the shortlist. It’s not to the point where there are negotiations or offers yet, but they’re monitoring his situation, especially after he’s Bayern’s number one sales candidate—not because they don’t appreciate him, but because they can see him bringing in money.”

Coman’s versatility—comfortable across the front line—makes him an appealing candidate for Slot’s new system at Liverpool. As Falk added, “With his high speed, he would fit in really well. He comes in on the left, but he can actually play all of them, so that would be interesting for the team.” This adaptability could relieve pressure on the likes of Luis Díaz and Cody Gakpo, and perhaps provide depth behind the evergreen Salah.

But the Frenchman’s long catalogue of muscular injuries, including nine absences since last season, casts a shadow. Liverpool fans know the perils of signing injury-prone talent—Naby Keita’s spell comes to mind—and the stop-start rhythm that so often prevents potential from becoming consistent contribution. Given Coman’s reported wage demands and Liverpool’s traditionally cautious financial approach, hesitation is understandable.
While the rumoured transfer fee—potentially as low as €30m (£26m)—may seem a bargain for a player of Coman’s pedigree (69 goals and 69 assists in 328 Bayern appearances), the wage bill and risk profile remain daunting. At 28, with his best numbers now a few years behind him and a record pace of 35.66 km/h that earned him the nickname “speed demon” in his prime, there are open questions about whether he represents a genuine upgrade over existing options.

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Kingsley Coman
Liverpool scouts will be wary of Coman's extensive injury record in recent seasons.

Liverpool are not alone in their interest. Both Arsenal and Tottenham are believed to be monitoring Coman, with Arsenal especially keen after missing out on Leroy Sané. As Bayern look to reshape their squad under Kompany—and with Coman eager for more regular football—the stage is set for a summer bidding war, with Anfield, the Emirates and Spurs’ new home all potential destinations. Some analysts point to Liverpool’s recent policy of prioritising players with ‘high availability’, suggesting a move for Coman would mark a gamble, reminiscent of the club’s calculated risks in the past.

Mo Salah’s fresh contract gives Liverpool stability—but will he soon be sharing the flanks with Coman?

Ultimately, the Reds stand at a crossroads: the allure of Coman’s pace and winning mentality weighed against the reality of injuries and high wages. Will Liverpool roll the dice, or isn’t it time to look elsewhere? As the transfer market heats up, fans—and the rest of the Premier League—will be watching with keen interest.
