Is Mikel Arteta’s Future at Risk? Arsenal Legend’s Bold Ultimatum
As Arsenal navigates the final stretch of the season, the spotlight has turned to Mikel Arteta, with club legend Jens Lehmann issuing a stark warning over the manager's future. With speculation surrounding Arteta's position intensifying, the former goalkeeper insists that unless significant trophies come the Gunners' way next year, the manager could be facing the sack.
Despite a promising start to the season, particularly after strong performances in the Champions League, Arsenal appears poised to finish second in the Premier League for the third consecutive year, following Liverpool's recent title victory. Lehmann's comments come on the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final's first leg, leaving Arteta's men with a daunting task ahead in the return fixture.
Lehmann, who once donned the gloves for Arsenal during their last Champions League final appearance in 2006, reflected on Arteta's tenure, stating, "I think he started with a bad start, but you have to give a lot of credit to him. He pulled himself out, he changed the team and now he has made them very stable, and stable at the top, which is fantastic for the current owner." However, he added, "But obviously, he has to win next year. This year, they could have won [the Premier League], Man City dropped a little bit, Liverpool replaced them."
Going deeper into his assessment, Lehmann suggested that Arteta might need to rethink his approach as a manager. He stated that the Gunners could be more successful if Arteta were willing to adopt a bolder and more dynamic style of leadership. "Sometimes, it's about control and being cautious. But if you want to win some things, in my opinion you could be a little more risky," he explained.
The manager himself remains optimistic despite his critics, expressing confidence in his team's capabilities against PSG. Arteta noted, "It’s just half-time, I said exactly the same message after beating Real Madrid 3-0 at home. We go to Paris to win, and I fully believe that we can do it." His belief in the squad’s potential to turn the tie around is evident, as he praised their character following the loss.

Yet, as Arsenal fans hope for a resurgence in form, Lehmann's critical eye remains on the club's trajectory. With a history steeped in success, the looming question is whether Arteta can adapt and navigate the team back to their former glory before the clock runs out on his managerial tenure.
As the pressure mounts, supporters are left wondering: Can Arsenal rediscover their winning mentality and end their trophy drought under Arteta's reign? The coming weeks will be pivotal for the club's ambitions, and fans are eagerly waiting to see if the Gunners can rise to the occasion in both the Premier League and Champions League.
