Have Liverpool Outdone Manchester United Once Again?

Liverpool FC’s long-time brand partner Carlsberg is celebrating the club’s record-equalling 20th league title with a cheeky series of billboards in the heart of the city. Reading: “Back on our “f****** perch”? Probably.”, the advert cleverly references a famous line once aimed at Liverpool’s dominance by former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, as well as the beer brand’s popular slogan. Mounted swiftly following the club’s title win on 27 April after a resounding 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, these eye-catching boards can now be seen at Liverpool’s Central Station, Boxpark, Aintree and Edge Lane. “This historic win puts Liverpool FC firmly back at the top of English football, equalling Manchester United’s record of 20 league titles,” said Carlsberg head of marketing, Samuel Johnson. “So, we wanted to do something to mark the occasion. As a partner for more than 30 years, we’ve been with Liverpool FC through plenty of highs and lows, so to be able to celebrate the club’s triumphant return to their ‘perch’ is really special, and of course, we had to do it in typical Carlsberg fashion.” The campaign marks the continuation of the Danish beer’s long-standing relationship with the football club, first established back in 1992. Echoing the sentiments of many fans, the victory has caused a stir amongst Manchester United supporters who have reflected on their club's decline in recent years. Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure at United saw the club dominate the English football landscape, even after they claimed their 19th league title in 2011, leaving Liverpool lagging with only 18. However, with Liverpool’s recent success, which also includes their Premier League triumph in 2020, fans began to pour out their apologies to Ferguson for their club's failure to maintain its former glory. One user on X poignantly shared a photograph documenting his time at United, remarking, “We are sorry Sir Alex Ferguson. We let Liverpool catch up.” Ferguson himself has repeatedly downplayed the personal rivalry with Liverpool throughout his career, insisting that the most vital aspect was always about United’s success rather than simply surpassing their rivals. "It was a big challenge. In the 80s it was Liverpool's time, and I never thought we could achieve what we have,” he stated after securing United’s 19th title, reflecting on the intense competition that has now re-emerged. This sense of rivalry has taken on new relevance as Liverpool’s resurgence places them back on equal footing with United, who, since Ferguson’s departure in 2013, has struggled under numerous managerial changes, never quite finding the stability they once enjoyed. The palpable sentiment among Manchester United’s supporters suggests a mix of nostalgia and hope as they grapple with the current state of affairs, and it raises questions about the future: Can United reclaim their place, or have Liverpool set a new standard in English football? As Liverpool savours this significant victory, the sense of rivalry ignites discussions about what the next season holds. Will Liverpool cement their place at the top, or will Manchester United rise again? In light of these developments, let us know your thoughts.
