Gordon in Late Fitness Race as Newcastle Prepare for Manchester United Showdown

As Newcastle United gear up for a pivotal Premier League clash against Manchester United at St James’ Park this Sunday, all eyes are on winger Anthony Gordon’s recovery from a troubling injury. The outcome of his fitness test could prove decisive in the Magpies’ drive for a Champions League return, while manager Eddie Howe’s own bout of illness has added a layer of suspense to a week already rich in narrative twists.

Anthony Gordon during training
Anthony Gordon has returned to the pitch during his injury recovery.

Gordon, who only recently completed a three-match suspension incurred from a costly red card in the FA Cup, has not played for Newcastle since being taken off with a bruising groin injury while on England duty on 21 March. His absence spanned crucial victories over West Ham, Brentford and, most recently, Leicester City—a run that has kept Newcastle’s Champions League hopes alive. Nonetheless, assistant manager Jason Tindall has offered cautious optimism, explaining, “He’s had a decent week with the physios. He was back out on the grass for a session yesterday so we'll assess him today to see how he's responded to that, then we'll have to make a late call on whether he's available for Sunday.”

Alongside Gordon’s uncertain status, Newcastle face the continued unavailability of Lewis Hall, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, all long-term casualties. Joe Willock is also sidelined due to concussion, further stretching the squad ahead of what Tindall has described as “the most testing run” of Newcastle’s recent seasons. Yet, the club has shown impressive mental fortitude following their celebrated Carabao Cup final triumph over Liverpool—a win that could easily have distracted from their primary league objectives.

Meanwhile, star striker Alexander Isak, who’s also been carefully managed due to a recent groin injury, has returned to full training and is expected to lead the line against Manchester United. Tindall confirmed, “He’s trained, and he feels fine. Our main focus is the Man United game and making sure we deliver our best performance.” This clarity of purpose, even amidst personnel challenges, reflects the unity and resilience fostered under Howe’s stewardship.

Speaking of Howe, the Newcastle boss has been notably absent from training due to illness, but Tindall, who filled in for media duties, was quick to allay concerns: “He’s been really poorly in the last couple of days but we’ve been in daily contact… and I’m sure he’ll be fine for the weekend.” The seamless communication between Howe and his assistants—polished in their 16 years together—has ensured that preparations for United’s visit have continued without disruption. As Tindall remarked, “They know the expectations. They know the demands and what they need to deliver to make sure they’re fully prepared for the weekend.”

There’s an added historic edge to Sunday’s encounter: Newcastle are seeking their first league double over Manchester United since the 1930/31 season, and a fifth consecutive win in all competitions would strengthen their grip on a precious Champions League spot—especially as the Premier League is set to receive a fifth qualification place in the 2025/26 campaign. With only eight games left and fierce competition for the European berths, the stakes could hardly be higher.

The decisions made in the next 48 hours—over Gordon’s fitness and Howe’s recovery—may shape Newcastle’s fate in this high-wire race for Europe. Will the Magpies’ resilience see them through another critical test on Tyneside, or will Manchester United spoil their momentum?
