Could One Decision Have Saved Arsenal’s Season? Arteta Reflects on Painful Regrets
Arsenal's head coach Mikel Arteta has openly discussed the regret surrounding a crucial decision he made during the current season that has had significant repercussions for his team's performance. The Gunners have had a turbulent 2024/25 campaign, marred by injuries and inconsistencies, prompting Arteta to reflect on his management choices that have shaped the team's prospects.
In a recent appearance on the Men In Blazers podcast, Arteta admitted that one specific decision regarding striker Gabriel Jesus haunts him. Having returned from a prior injury, Jesus was instrumental in the Gunners' attack, showcasing his quality through six goals in as many games. However, during Arsenal's FA Cup match against Manchester United in January, disaster struck.
As Jesus began to show signs of discomfort, Arteta chose to keep him on the pitch, a decision he now deeply regrets. “Possibly yes,” he stated when asked if there’s a mistake he wishes he could change. Arteta elaborated, “If I could pause the game and say, ‘Gabriel Jesus, we brought you back to life, you are doing incredibly well, you’re now going to get injured,’ I would say ‘stop, we are going to swap him.’ Unfortunately, we cannot do this. The decision is made; there is no way back.”
The fallout from this decision has been substantial. Following Jesus’s injury, Arsenal has found itself in a precarious position without a traditional centre-forward, exacerbated by the subsequent hamstring injury to Kai Havertz. The absence of both players has forced Arteta into tactical adjustments, notably deploying midfielder Mikel Merino as an impromptu striker. Despite his commendable efforts, scoring six goals, the team has struggled to find the net consistently. Lack of firepower has become a defining characteristic of Arsenal's season, contributing to their early exit from the Premier League title race and significant challenges in the Champions League.
Profoundly affected by these circumstances, Arteta has been under mounting pressure, especially as he prepares for the Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain. Arsenal legend Ray Parlour emphasised the impact of losing key players like Thomas Partey alongside Jesus and Havertz, suggesting their absence has disrupted the balance and effectiveness of the squad. “Arsenal missed Partey’s presence in the centre of midfield,” Parlour noted, underlining how tactical shifts have made it more challenging for the team to perform optimally.
Looking ahead, the Gunners are expected to pursue reinforcements in the summer transfer window, particularly in the striking department, to mitigate the risk of such injuries derailing their ambitions in future campaigns. The pressing need for depth and quality in attacking positions could potentially reshape Arsenal's strategy as they aim to avoid similar pitfalls.
As Arsenal fans await the outcome of the upcoming match in Paris, they are left to ponder: Could a single decision have altered the course of the season? Will Arteta's reflections lead to wiser choices moving forward? These questions linger in the air as supporters long for resurgence in form and fortune.
