Could Manchester United’s Latest Wonderkid Be the Next Big Star?

As Manchester United gears up for the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao, fans are buzzing with excitement and curiosity surrounding the inclusion of young talents in the squad. Among them, Chido Obi-Martin has caught the spotlight despite not being eligible to play due to UEFA regulations.

Obi-Martin, the 17-year-old forward, has established himself as a promising player since joining United from Arsenal. Despite impressive performances in the youth ranks—14 goals in 15 matches across both Under-18 and Under-21 levels—he finds himself sidelined for the upcoming clash with Bilbao due to an oversight in squad selection for the knockout rounds. Moreover, his recent signing makes him ineligible to be placed on the B list typically reserved for youth players.

Coach Ruben Amorim explained the strategy behind Obi-Martin's limited exposure to first-team action, highlighting the importance of managing young talents in an environment rife with competition. "I am trying to manage everything; it is a big step for them. I am trying to think about every aspect," Amorim noted, emphasising a cautious approach toward introducing youth into the high-pressure landscape of the Premier League.

Alongside Obi-Martin, another youth talent, Bendito Mantato, has also been included in the travelling squad. The young forward, often compared to Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, has made a name for himself with his agility and attacking skills, with his goal-scoring ability showcased during a stunning FA Youth Cup moment where he netted a last-minute winner against Arsenal in February.

While Mantato may not start against Athletic Bilbao, his swift pace and ability to drive at defenders might make him an ideal substitution to inject fresh energy into the game. Given the stakes of the semi-final and United's current league struggles—sitting in 15th and desperate for European football next season—the inclusion of such players signals a shift in approach, possibly hinting that established wingers like Antony and Jadon Sancho are on the verge of a rethink in their futures at the club.

As United prepares to face Bilbao, supporters are keenly aware that the journey of young talents like Obi-Martin and Mantato could hold the key to future success. Whether undermined by issues of squad eligibility or the challenges of top-flight competition, these youngsters are part of a broader strategy to ensure that Manchester United's rich developmental lineage remains unbroken.

Will Obi-Martin's gradual introduction pay off? Can Mantato emerge as the wildcard United so desperately needs? As the players take to the pitch in Bilbao, one thing is certain: the futures of these young stars could spell the difference for Manchester United’s aspirations this season.
