Arsenal’s Relentless Pursuit: How Arteta And His Stars Are Keeping The Premier League Dream Alive

As the Premier League season hurtles towards its climax, Arsenal’s renewed title ambitions are once again under the spotlight. With expert projections, fierce rival reactions and the backdrop of Mikel Arteta’s transformative tenure, the race for the crown promises high drama. The Gunners’ resilience and self-belief, despite daunting mathematical odds, make their pursuit all the more compelling.

After a morale-boosting Champions League win over Real Madrid, Arsenal face London rivals Brentford with seven crucial league matches remaining. They currently trail leaders Liverpool by 11 points, but their European form — including stunning free-kicks from Declan Rice and a decisive goal from Mikel Merino — has injected fresh confidence into the squad. Meanwhile, competitors Liverpool and Manchester City have shown recent vulnerability, introducing new twists in a fiercely contested title race.

Statistical powerhouse Opta predicts Liverpool will finish on roughly 87 points, four fewer than Manchester City’s title-winning tally last year. Arsenal’s forecast stands at 76 points — a gap that seemingly locks them out of contention. Yet they can still theoretically reach a maximum of 83. To do so, they must win every remaining fixture, hoping Liverpool falter along the way. It’s a slender but not impossible hope, especially given Liverpool’s recent slip-ups — including a 3-2 defeat to Fulham that reignited Arsenal’s fading dreams.

After Liverpool’s shock loss at Craven Cottage, emotions rippled across North London. Arsenal stars Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice openly celebrated former Gunner Alex Iwobi’s role in denting Liverpool’s charge. Iwobi’s Instagram lit up with praise, including teammates hailing him as the ‘Ronaldinho from Nigeria,’ highlighting the emotional interconnectedness shaping the title battle’s narrative.

Publicly, neither Mikel Arteta nor Liverpool’s Arne Slot are conceding. Jamie Carragher, speaking on Monday Night Football, emphasised that “everybody in this country thinks Liverpool have won the title – besides Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, and besides Arne Slot and Liverpool.” According to Carragher, Arteta’s visible anger after the Everton draw suggested just how much belief he is injecting into his side. For Slot, the key remains relentless work ethic, admitting that his side’s narrow wins prove there’s no room for complacency. “We are fully aware we have to compete for seven more games. The only way to win is by hard work, 90 minutes of constant effort,” he said.

Such tenacity reflects Arteta’s entire Arsenal project since his arrival in December 2019. Back then, he inherited an emotionally fractured squad. Speaking this season, he recalled: “There was a lack of belief and a lot of negativity. So many have contributed to turn it around... the stadium is completely transformed.” Under his watch, Arsenal recorded their highest ever Premier League wins and goals last campaign — and their first legitimate title fight since the Wenger era. They might fall just short once more, but this sustained improvement is tangible proof of progress.

Despite daunting odds and cold statistics, Arsenal’s players and manager remain undeterred, fuelled as much by recent shocks to Liverpool’s form as their own upward trajectory. Ultimately, their relentless pursuit promises a thrilling finale, whether heartbreak or triumph await. The question now is: can this young, transformed Arsenal side write their own fairy tale ending before the curtain falls on this season?
