What Does the Future Hold for Women’s Football with the Advent of the World Sevens Tournament?

In an exciting development for women's football, Manchester United is set to participate in the first-ever Women's World Sevens tournament, scheduled to take place from 21 to 23 May. This innovative seven-a-side competition, taking place in Estoril, Portugal, is generating buzz with a significant prize pool of $5 million. Joining Manchester United in this competitive field are notable European clubs such as Bayern Munich, Ajax, and Benfica, with four additional teams yet to be announced. This competition takes place just three days before the Women's Champions League final, adding to the anticipation surrounding it.

Marc Skinner, Manchester United's head coach, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "This is a really exciting opportunity to be part of something new for the women's game." The tournament is expected to deliver fast-paced, entertaining matches, allowing teams to showcase their talent across a condensed format.

What sets this tournament apart is its unique structure. Each match consists of two 15-minute halves, with unlimited substitutions, allowing clubs to rotate players frequently. These shorter games will help manage players' loads, especially during a congested football season.

Critics, however, have raised concerns regarding the addition this new tournament makes to an already packed women’s football calendar. The head coach of the England team, Sarina Wiegman, has expressed doubts about the long-term viability of such events. Nevertheless, former England defender Anita Asante, now a World Sevens Football ambassador, emphasised that player welfare has been paramount in developing the tournament’s format. "Having a bigger squad allows them to manage those minutes, manage the load, and allow multiple players to have playing opportunities," she said.

Notably, the tournament is financially backed by philanthropist Jennifer Mackesy, a co-owner of Gotham FC, who has promised considerable investment to ensure its success. This funding represents a significant commitment to the growth of women's football.

As anticipation builds, the question remains—will this new format capture the hearts of football fans and generate enthusiasm around women's competitions? Collette Roche, Manchester United’s chief operating officer, believes in the importance of innovation in the sport, stating, "We want Manchester United to be at the forefront of growth and innovation in women’s football." This sentiment echoes as clubs aim to draw in new audiences.

One thing is for sure: the eyes of the football world will be on Portugal in May.
