Is the Rivalry Between Argentina and Mexico Overstated? Messi Weighs In

In a recent interview, Lionel Messi has stirred the pot regarding the historically perceived rivalry between Argentina and Mexico, claiming that the notion of animosity is exaggerated. As the Argentine captain and a global football icon settles into life in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, his candid remarks on the matter have captured considerable attention.

Messi stated, "They put themselves in a position of having a rivalry with us that doesn't really exist. There's no comparison between Argentina and Mexico, and I don't know where that came from." His comments are particularly striking considering Argentina has dominated Mexico in their past encounters, boasting 16 victories over El Tri in 32 matches, only suffering four losses.

The backdrop to Messi’s remarks lies in the heated atmosphere that enveloped their recent encounters, most notably the 2-0 victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The match was charged with emotion as fans hoped to see Mexico topple the two-time World Cup champions. However, Messi’s subsequent comments regarding the energy from Mexican supporters reveal a sense of mixed feelings. He said, "It was the first game (in Qatar) where it felt like, I don’t know if there were more Mexicans than Argentines, but it was very even." This reflects not only the competitive spirit but also a level of respect between the teams.

However, Messi’s relationship with Mexican fans has seen its share of controversy, especially following an incident at the World Cup when he exchanged jerseys with Mexican player Andrés Guardado, which some fans misinterpreted as disrespect. Boxing champion Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez became embroiled in the situation, stating that Messi had insulted Mexico by leaving the jersey on the floor. After a public spat, Canelo apologised, but the narrative nonetheless stoked tensions.

In recent games with Inter Miami against Mexican clubs, Messi's playful celebration, raising three fingers to reference Argentina's World Cup victories in contrast to Mexico's zero, further divided fandom in the region. His comment, "Honestly, I don’t know what happened with the Mexicans, or when that rivalry or displeasure started," showcases his perplexity towards the aggressiveness from some fans.

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, Messi reflects on his remarkable journey, stating, "We won everything. There’s nothing left." This humility best describes Messi’s perspective, elevating personal achievements above rivalries. He noted that the tournament is filled with unpredictable moments, wherein luck favors dedicated teams, a sentiment that resonates deeply with his own experience at the World Cup.

As Messi navigates a new chapter in his career, the question remains: will the rivalry between Argentina and Mexico become a footnote in football history, or will the passion of the fans reignite the flame? With Messi's career still flourishing and the anticipated 2026 World Cup looming, one can only wonder how future encounters will unfold.
